Angel always tells me that she is ‘怕怕’ (scared) lately especially when she sees something that she is not familiar of. When she sees some strangers knocking at our doors or hear some weird noise outside our house, she will ran quickly towards me telling me ‘怕怕’ (scared) while making a fearful face, whinning a bit and tapping on her chest showing that she is scared! Or when she sees a moving object / toy moving towards her directions, she will also tell me ‘怕怕’ (scared) and ran towards me and wants me to carry her right away. Even when we suddenly switched off the light in the room, she will also crying telling us that she is ‘怕怕’ (scared) until we switch on the light again. Sometimes in the TV she saw a shadowy cartoon character (e.g. Casper) or some monster looking creature characters, she will also shout and cry out loud ‘怕怕’ (Scared). She is afraid of lizards, She couldn’t go near a Clown or a moving Mascot in the shopping malls. Basically she is afraid of all the figures which doesn’t have a human form or doesn’t looks like a normal human being …….. So everyday, our little former ‘Daring Queen’ will tell me ‘怕怕’ (Scared) for at least few times a day for every small matters. I do not know whether kids at her age will show sign of fear towards something that they doesn’t like but what I am trying to do now is explain to her all the things that she is afraid of and encourage her to be brave while supporting her and not rushing her into anything that she won’t not dare to go near. But strange thing is, if I scold her or show that I am angry, she will not show sign that she is fearful *sigh*. Jumping down from the staircase is her favourite stunt at the moment but still, she is no afraid to fall down and hurt herself too. *double sigh* But I think hubby enjoys the time that his little girl is ‘怕怕’ (Scared) and running towards him and asked him to carry her coz that’s the time where hubby and I get to hold her in our arms and tell her “Not to be afraid, Daddy and Mommy will always by your side Angel …...” :)

Ethan starts tapping his chest and say the word 'scared' whenever he hears something strange recently but hardly runs to me.. to him, he says 'scared' bcoz he is not familiar with the so-called thing or sound.. i know this coz he always follow-up with.. 'whats dat?' so i usually will try to bring him to see wat he hears or tell him what is that becoz he is learning and too many new things sometimes overwhelms him..
maybe angel got overwhelm too.. or maybe without ur knowledge, she had seen a ghostly snippet on tv dat haunts her now and then.. just encourage her to face the fear n try not to make a big fuss about it infront of her coz it can bring a whole lot of trouble if she understands dat u being 'kan-cheong' bout it.. :)
Oh yes.. my boy is 2 yrs 6 mths now.. and he learn what the meaning of 'scared' already... he will do the same way, tapping his chest and say scared.
1 funny incident happen recently..during our vacation to chiang mai.. My hub and family was telling jokes in a car, and suddenly they all laugh out Louddd!!! My son suddenly ask them to 'ssshhh' with his finger on mouth and he tap his chest...and say 'scared'... everybody quiet.. LOL..
This is exactly what Sarah knows for the past one month.."pa pa". Although she doesn't know how to say it, but she will show the action.
For Sarah, she basically scared of everything...I even bought some chinese medicine for her. There was few nights that she was scared of some minor sounds till doesn't want to sleep..cham mor! Luckily now she is okay..
Now the worst is when she heard of fireworks, she will cry!
Will Angel scared of it too?
Me and my husband also cant do much other than comforting her..I really hope that Angel and Sarah will be more brave.
well, chloe did the same and say 怕怕 few months back when she first starting to learn this gesture & express the feeling of fear.
especially to something 'weird' in terms of sounds and not so much on a person that time unless that person really 'yiong sui' lah.. hahahaha
she din do that nowadays (dunno why) unless she saw something really scary then she will run to me immediately & ask me to bring her over & check out further!!! hahaha..
perhaps it's just a learning stage for her since she is picking up speaking and trying express herself better? ;)
My boy oso tapping his chest when he's scared..
Same thing happened here. Xixi also told me "Pa Pa" and tap her chest few times everyday. So kesian.. She scared the stranger especially guy. She will hug me real tight and whinning when she saw something not has a human looks too. I remembered once there's motorbike passed by our house and Xixi even frighten by the loud motor sound and she run very quick towards me and telling me "pa pa".. aiyoh, she looks so fearful at that moment. I thought Xixi is the only one who so 胆小，but after read thru your post and some of the mummies comments above, i guess this is just a learning stage for them to express their feeling. =)
Does that happen to Angel everyday now? Hv u actually taught her to say "pa-pa" lately? If yes, maybe it's what she's learnt, and tried to apply it in her daily life... Well, I don't think there's much to worry if she's eating & sleeping well..
Does she wake up at night crying or sort of being cranky & fussy? If yes, maybe u should try giving her some Chinese medicines for nerve fright..
Merryn, thanks for your advice … sometimes like the vacuum cleaner I did show to Angel and also let her turn that on but she still is very afraid whenever she heard the vacuuming sound wor …. Don’t’ know why :(

JT, Yes … Angel will cry out loud if she heard the firecracker sound and sometimes she run so fast that she falls down …… this always happens when she is very afraid of something until sometimes her poo poo also turn green :( I guess baby girl are more timid but I do hope that they will become braver and braver as days goes by hor ….. Jia yu!!!
Agnes, hahaha …. Ask you over and bring you to check it out ah??? Really brave and very ‘curious’ leh but I think that’s good. Angel is different now, she refuse to even walk towards the direction even with me carrying her …. I do hope that she will be brave and curious as Chloe soon. I am more relief to know that it’s just a phrase of kids growing up :) Actually I thought they will only know what is scared at a much older age la, hahhaa :P

Serere, you are ‘in the club’ also ah?? After reading your comment then now I know that most kids this age is showing the same sign and not just Angel who is acting timid :) But sometimes she is really really afraid and run so fast that she falls down hard …. So dangerous!!!
Esmeralda, yes …. She does that very often compare to few months ago when she started to show sign of ‘afriad’. If we were by her side then she is more ok but when I am at the kitchen and she heard someone is knocking on the door …. Walauuuu …. Ran so fast crying and tripped herself on the floor, so dangerous. Oh … she is not having nightmare after that or anything because we always comfort her and do not let her to be afraid until ‘that’ extend la, luckily! Last time she used to like her ‘Walking Doll” so much but lately she told me she is afraid and will cry whenever we make the doll walk. She will quickly grab the doll and put it back into the cupboard. Same goes to the FP Animal Zoo Train. If we on the power of the train and the train move slowly, she will cry out loud and tell us she is afraid also and grab the train and put it back in the cupboard :( That’s her 2 fav toys which is totally abundant totally now :(

Poor Angel.. I can imagine her running away and tripping herself...
One thing to note, I was being told by my younger cousin (she's 12 now) that last time when she's asleep she will have scary nightmare esp when she's sleeping with her Barbie doll... and when she's not sleeping with a doll, she's fine.. Does that make sense to you? Well, just use your own judgement lar...
Jonathan is scare of most things since he was born. He get jerked and awake easily when he was a baby.
Now, even when something fell on the ground and created a loud noise, he will quickly run and hug me. During CNY's eve midnight when the whole town was filled with firecrackers sound, he hug me tight lying on my chest and not move a single inch.
So mascots are a no no to him. He dare sit on Mr. KFC or Ronald McDonald.
Gwen never say scared or "papa" wor. After we moved in to our new house, Gwen is very scared of those loud drilling sound. She would run to me and fuss. Although she has been listening to this sound almost everyday, she is still very scared. But she has outgrown her fear of the vacuum cleaner sound recently. She is not afraid of fireworks though. It's normal for kids this age to experience fear coz they are more aware now of their surrounding and their imaginations are playing in their minds too.
My girl also like to say Papa... I always reply her, bu yong pa! Haha!!

Julie, I think Jonathan have a friend here – Angel. She also does the same as Jonathan. Angel will even walk far away from Ronal McDonald if she sees him from far away! Hahaha …

ya jayden is scared of loud sounds! any loud sound, he will get a shock followed by cries...heheh...
i am sure all kids have one fear or another in their lives, just like adults we are all fearful of something!
Kristie, I think loud sound will scared small kids even adults too. But the funny thing was Angel is afraid of soft noise too ..... last time she was still a baby, she always frighten when hubby walk pass her coz she can hear hubby's knuckle producing some small noise when he walk pass her, hahahaha
