Drinking Water and A Cup Of Milk

Can you believe that Angel do not like plain water since she was born until now that she is 2Y2M old? So normally her drink will be home boiled sweet soup (without sugar), pure homemake fruit juices or very diluted apples juice. We have tried feeding her plain water with spoon, with sippy cup and with straws but she would only take few sips the most then starts making a terrible face as if she has drank something horrible or worst, she will choke on plain water (plain water only)!! We constantly trying various ways to make her likes water but she just doesn’t fancy water at all. So normally I will feed her with pure queeze fruit juices or the ready to drink fresh crushed apples juice in the carton, and then diluted 1 - 2 oz juice with 8oz of water and surprisingly, she loves and won’t reject the almost tasteless apple juice at all. I guess she just want to have some taste in her water to cover up the ‘water’ taste.

Until lately when Angel’s grandma trying to give her the straw cup with plain water in it, surprisingly she drank it for the very first time without making any noise / choke :) Although it’s only 1 – 2 oz for a starts, at least it’s a good start. Currently, her intake of plain water is increasing to almost 6 oz per day with us constantly reminding her to ‘drink water’ which she would take few sips at a time. So at this moment, plain water has become 1/3 of her daily water intake (not including milk) and I must say that I am please with that :) Well ….. better be late then never :)

I love to see how she hold and use her straw cup :)

However, yesterday I tried to give her with her beloved formula milk in her drinking cup which she normally uses to drink her juices and unexpectedly after a few sip and taste the milk, she refused to drink them at all. She even makes a 'want to puke' act when I force her to take another sip! But when I pour them back into her milk bottle, she finished it happily again ….. hhhhmmmmmm, I wonder why? Sigh, I really have no idea on how to train her to drink milk from her normal cup *scratch head* :( Anyone having the same problem?

she is cute with the water cup!! and look at her eyes.. gosh... so round!

I am quoting from my brother (when he used to drink from bottle) that the kids find it easier to drink milk with bottle, and I don't know why. I keep asking him but he says just feel like it.

My mum did not wean him off the bottle till he is like 6 or 7 years old, coz milk is like his main intake of food (this brother of mine don't take lots of solid food and he is picky). Till then, he told my mum he don't want it coz shame shame.. heheheh...

Anyway, my little brother now is already hitting 20 years of age! hahaha.. (he will slaughter me if he know I wrote this) hahaha...

My cousin sis also says that if we start to wean kids of the bottle, they will tend to have less milk too...

So may be you consider to let Angel have hers for some more time? :)

i'm not weaning ethan off the milk bottle soon too.. no rush there.

i've heard toddlers choking on water too. my nieces all had that last time. ethan is a water drinker since born but since he had ulcer last month, he refuses to drink water saying that it is painful. then he recovered n still refused. so wat i did was, bring him out, show him the lizard n told him that lizard loves eating toddlers tongue that has not been washed with water and woolah, he has been drinking like a camel since! LOL!

angel looks so sweet drinking there! toddlers tend to do that, drinking the most tasteless substance as long as it is not plain water... but at least, better than not drinking at all rite? most importantly, do u n hubs drink a lot of water? u guys have to set a good example. always let angel see u guys gulping down tonnes n tonnes of water! :D

Are you trying to wean Angel off milk bottle? I heard that sucking is good for brain stimulation. So I'm still giving Jonathan milk bottle.

Oh, she looks so sweet with her drinking cup! Xixi has no problem drinking plain water. She also drink water from the same sippy cup, but as for milk she still drink from the milk bottle.

I have the same prob with you dear. Gwen doesn't like to drink plain water since she was a baby too. But recently, she drinks more water using a cup(normal cup without straw). I have yet to let her drink milk from the cup. Someone once told me, toddlers drink more milk using the milk bottles..haha..so I'll just let her use the milk bottles for the time being..hehe.

BTW, Angel looks very cute holding her cup. :)

So sorry I dun have much advice regarding drinking milk from the cup/sippy cup too as Ashton too will only drink his milk from his milk bottle. Even if I feed him with a spoon from a cup too he won't drink unless it's chocolate milk (which I told him is "MILO"). That makes up his milk intake if somehow he refuses to drink his usual milk for some other reasons.

Lately too I find that Ashton too wants me to add something into his drinking water, be it his Millenium, or the gripe water, or apple juice. Same like what you said, I think kids now likes good food/drinks. Unless we are outside and have no access to his Millenium/gripe water - he will drink plain water. Else he will open the fridge himself and ask me to put some of it into his drinking water.

I'm still struggling with the fact that he refuses to drink water from sippy cups/straw. He will show the 'vomiting' action, and believe me, he is really a 'vomiter'. He can make me really panic when he's doing that coz it's like he is really vomiting!

Cath, your boy is always such a good boy la, never give you much problems :)

Cynthia, I believe that drinking bottle is easier for kids and for mom too (the mess) :)
- Hahahaha …. I think a lot of kids are having bottles until they are very ‘grown up’ liao leh :) I am one of them :)
- Actually I have no intention of weaning Angel off her bottle as yet but sometimes, it will be nice if she could drink them from her cup during her teatime when she is sitting in an upright position :)

Merryn, no weaning Angel off her milk bottle la …. I just got her BPA Free bottle leh :) But sometimes it’ll be nice if she could drink from a cup when she is having her tea break :)
- Hahaha …. Your lizard story really works like magic ya?
- Ya … me and hubby drink lots of water everyday now but that doesn’t effect her at all leh. But I remember when I was still a kid, I hates water so much and hardly drink water when I am at school leh, maybe that’s why :( I only starts to love water when I am in my 20s LoL

Julie, no … not weaning Angel off bottle as yet, just wish that she could drink from a cup once in awhile during her tea time when she is sitting in an upright position :) Oh …. It’s good for brain stimulation ah? That’s nice to know too :)

Serene, Xixi have the same cup too? I like this sippy cup a lot!! It’s much more better then the Avent brand of stuffs coz at least, no leaking for me like the avent bottles :(

Mummy Gwen, I believe that kids will drink more milk from a bottle too ….. not weaning Angel off the bottle yet but I just hope that she could drink from a cup when she is heaving her tea break while sitting upright ma, easier for her and for me too but guess that, she just don’t like the idea of drinking milk from a cup :(

Esmeralda, hahahaha … but Ashton knows that Milo should be spoon feed and not bottle feed?? Kekekekeke …. Kids nowadays are too smart :)
- Oh …. I didn’t know that Ashton also loves water with some other taste in it! BTW, what is Millenium??
- No need to worry about the sippy cup/ straw coz last month Angel still reject her sippy cup and straw, but now …. She will look for her straw cup everyday in the morning! Strange!!
- but did you let Ashton drink from a straw now? I did ….. and her first drink was my 7 up and although it’s her first trial on straw, she is drinking it like a ‘pro’, really!! The reason is simply because it’s 7 up and not normal water, that’s why! @_@
- Last time whenever Angel drink water also, she really looks as if she wants to vomit leh …. That’s why I don’t dare to push it further so I am more then glad that she is willingly taking her straw cup with her whenever we asked her to drink water now :)

Haha..Little Angel so smart..mummy could 'cheat' her to drink milk on sippy cup ya...my boy currently still on straw in drinking plain water..sometimes, for fun he will drink for the cup. He has no problem in drinking plain water. But in drinking milk..still spoon feeding..but he will happily willing to offer drink the last oz from the cup!! why..cos he want to wash the cup by himself (in actual fact he want to play the water!!) :-)

At least Angel is drinking water using sippy cup. Not like Sarah, she has about 2 or 3 sippy cups, she just dont like them.

I also like the way Angel sucking the water, so cute and "si man".

Wei..........me too love to see Angel's cute face ( 2nd picture)...so cute then her face look chubby with big eyes....

Same milk-in-the-cup-rejection issue here. She LOVES her milk from the bottle too much, and totally not willing to try the cup at all. I dun mind letting her... since i've seen kids as old as 7yo still drinking from the bottle haha.. (self-consolation here)

My son loves to drink a lot of plain water from straw cup, too!~

My Ryan was the other way round. He loves plain water than any other juices or types of water. He'll make his funny face and pushes away if it's not plain water.

Oh yes, my boy also don't like to sip his formula from the sippy straw cup too... he also did the puke action too! However, he's ok by spoon feeding. Perhaps it tastes yucky/different by sipping & gulping via the straw?

Esmeralda said...

Yup, the moment he saw the colour of Milo or other drinks is not the colour of milk/plain water, he will do the 'vomiting face' and refused to drink.

Oh, Millenium is one of the products from E-Excel. It's cactus juice actually.

I tried to let Ashton drink from the straw - Coke, iced coffee, iced tea, etc but he's still unable to drink from it. No skill yet...

MommyAngel said...

Yugene, hahahaha … he wants to play with water so he is willing to finish off her milk quickly ah? So cute la!! But you spoon feed his milk ah? Takes how long to finish? Luckily my Angel is willing to drink from bottle coz 9 oz of milk really will take me forever to spoon feed her.

Joanne, maybe Sarah will like her sippy cup one day, just like Angel. Previously she hates that cup so much and now she will look for it everyday. Very strange hor …

MummyRyan, 3 years old ah … IC. But she is willing to drink her juice from the cup leh, as long as it’s not her milk :(

Hweili, yes … as long as they are willing to drink their milk and I think we mommies will not complain much about using the bottles :) But it would be nice to if they could use the cup once in awhile when the bottle is not available hor … sigh!

PeiWun, your Sean can drink from the straw cup already? Clever boy!

Doreen, I will be very happy if my girl can be like your Ryan who loves water!
- hhhmm … maybe you are right about the taste when using cups to drink milk oh, maybe that’s why she don’t like her milk in the cup.

Esmeralda, Cactus juice ah? That’s really good leh … I have taken cactus soup once in awhile but not cactus juice. Does it taste nice?
- Oh … you tried letting Ashton use the straw before ah? Maybe it’s not time yet lo in that case. But using the straw cup have a disadvantages too, Angel would start pouring the water on the floor when she knows that I am not looking!

Esmeralda said...

The Millenium is really nice... if don't control, we can drink one pack of 500ml within 1-2 days... but too expensive so have to control. Just Ashton alone drinking one pack, about 5-7 days...

Haha... The pouring game? Ashton also did that all the time when I give him the training cup. Watering the 'coffee table'. So everytime after he did that, he quickly go to the kitchen to get a towel to wipe it - that's when I know he watered the table liao. *sigh*

MommyAngel said...

Esmeralda, oh ... expensive ah? Mind to share how expensive? Making me feeling like having one too since you make it sounds so delicious!

At least Ashton will take a towel to wipe it, Angel will try to kick the water and start messing them all over the place using her feet and then jump on it! So dangerous ....

Esmeralda said...

Previously I bought a lot, for RM456 per box containing 2 500ml packs. Now the price has gone up to RM627.50 per box!!!

Believe me, the taste is really good. Actually it's a nutritious supplement beverage rich in phytochemicals. For more info, refer to http://www.eexcel.com.my/pr_sv_perf_mill.htm.

Angel is off to a good start! I am also always trying to make Jayden drink more water... Have tried so many methods, add gripe water, ribena, barley water (without sugar) and diluted juices... but for now, he is ok with plain water :p

MommyAngel said...

Esmeralda, wow…. That’s very expensive for 2 - 500ml packs! But as long as it’s good, I think it’s worth the price too la :) Thanks for the link, I will definitely have a look in it :)

Kristie, it’s good to know that Jayden loves plain water :) How's his constipation so far?

Esmeralda said...

Yup.. really expensive, but it's good in building up the immune system esp during illness - so unless we can no longer afford, then we'll stop.

You're most welcome. Do tell me what you think of it...

Esmeralda, ok :)
